How to remove location from iPhone photos

Most iPhone photos store the exact GPS coordinates of where they were taken, along with the date and phone model. Anyone who gets the original file can see where you live, work or spend time. Here's how to remove that information before you share.

Check whether a photo has a location

Open the photo in the Photos app and swipe up, or tap the ⓘ button. If you see a map, the photo contains a location.

Method 1: Turn off location when you share

  1. Select the photo and tap the Share button.
  2. At the top of the share sheet, tap Options.
  3. Turn off Location, tap Done, and share as usual.

This only affects the copy you send. You have to remember to do it every time.

Method 2: Remove the location in the Photos app

  1. Open the photo and tap the ⓘ button.
  2. Tap Adjust next to the location.
  3. Choose No Location.

This changes the photo in your library, so later copies won't include the location either.

Method 3: Strip location from files on any device

If the photos are already on a computer, or you're preparing files for a marketplace listing or a forum, use the photo location remover.

  1. Drop JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC files onto the page.
  2. Each photo shows whether it contained a GPS location and which camera took it.
  3. Download the cleaned copies.

For JPG and PNG files only the hidden data is removed, so image quality stays exactly the same. Everything happens in your browser, so the photos are never uploaded.

Stop saving location in the first place

On your iPhone, go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera and choose Never. New photos won't record where they were taken. Photos you already have are not changed.

Do social apps remove location for me?

Many large social networks strip location from the copy they show publicly. But files you send by email, as attachments in messaging apps, through cloud links or on marketplaces may keep it. Cleaning the file yourself is the safest habit.
