Best photo sizes for Instagram
Instagram shows photos at a width of 1080 pixels. Upload something much bigger and Instagram compresses it on its own, sometimes making it look soft. Resizing to the right size yourself gives you more control over how sharp the result looks.
The sizes to use
| Type | Size (pixels) | Shape |
|---|---|---|
| Square post | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 |
| Portrait post | 1080 × 1350 | 4:5 |
| Landscape post | 1080 × 566 | 1.91:1 |
| Story or Reel cover | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 |
Portrait 4:5 takes up the most space in the feed, which is why many accounts prefer it.
Resize a photo to 1080 px wide
- Open the image resizer.
- Set Resize by to Width (px) and enter 1080.
- Drop in your photos. The height is adjusted automatically so nothing is stretched.
- Download them one by one or as a ZIP.
It works with JPG, PNG, WebP and iPhone HEIC photos, and you can save as JPG at high quality (around 90%). Everything runs in your browser, so the photos are not uploaded anywhere before you post them.
Cropping vs resizing
Resizing changes the number of pixels but keeps the shape. If your photo is 3:2 and you want a 4:5 portrait post, crop it first in your phone's photo editor, then resize the cropped photo to 1080 px wide.
A privacy bonus
Resized copies are saved as new files, so GPS location and other metadata from the original aren't carried over. That matters when you share the same file elsewhere, such as in messages or on marketplaces.
